Happy 2017!

First and most of all, Happy New Year from The Sojourning Somm! Susan & I wish all of our blog readers the very best—happiness and health in 2017.

Second, this is a wonderful time to highlight our visit to Gruet's wonderful tasting room in Santa Fe, NM. In "Too Much Sojourning" I promised to post about our stops in South Dakota, Texas, and New Mexico. New Year's Eve is a perfect occasion to highlight Gruet Winery's sparkling wines.

You may already be familiar with Gruet, as their entry-level sparkling wines (a phrase that greatly undervalues the wines) are widely distributed. What you may not know is that many, many more wines are available at their tasting rooms in Santa Fe and Albuquerque. Susan is enjoying a glass of Sauvage Rosé NV—a zero dosage, Pinot Noir rosé agenda en triage for 24 months.

Also highly recommended: the Sauvage Vintage 2011 (this is not a rosé, but rather 100% Chardonnay, aged 48 months en triage at release), the Grand Blanc de Blancs Vintage 2011, and the the Grand Blanc de Noirs Vintage 2013, We would have loved to taste the Gilbert Grande Reserve, which spends 6 months in oak for the first fermentation, but will purchase a bottle while in Phoenix. AZ Wine in Scottsdale had this wine in stock last time we checked.

All that said, we cannot sufficiently stress how good Gruet's less expensive, more widely distributed wines are. We had a lovely, sunny lunch on the terrace at the Rosewood Inn of the Anasazi. The bottle of Gruet Blanc de Noirs we enjoyed with lunch was perfect. An even more wonderful surprise, Gruet's Demi Sec NV is just delightful. A small amount of sweetness (I hesitate to even say the word, lest you read no further, but it is a Demi Sec) is completely offset by the aromas and flavors of fresh, green apples and balancing acidity. Enjoy chilled Demi Sec while sitting outside on a pleasant day or by the fire while the winter snows fall. This wine is simply too good to be missed.
